[She gets up to unlatch the lock. Normally, it would be open for him; thanks to the wards, only a select few would even be able to enter her room, lock or no. But the nights had been getting cooler. A little too cool for her to sleep comfortably with it open.]

I'm sorry to bother you so early. Almost everyone else I know is still asleep.

[She tried to smile for him. It didn't quite reach her ears.]

[ Once the window is opened he slides across the sill, concern colouring his features that only deepened at her attempted smile. Baby Tooth wasn't with him, the small faerie soundly asleep in her little fluffy nest in Jack's suite; he hadn't woken her, not going far. ]

You know that doesn't matter to me... what's going on? You said something was wrong with you?

[She nodded. Not wanting to worry him, except...well...she was kind of worried too. Taking a deep breath, she tilted her head upward to meet his gaze.]

Do you...know who Dick is?

[ Jack frowned a little, having not expected that angle of questioning. He nodded in the direction of the wooden wall which bordered Zatanna's. ]

He's our neighbour in one of the other 3A suites and your...

[ what was he exactly, to Zatanna? he wasn't sure she even knew ]

You went with him to the opera I got you tickets for.

[Funny you should think that, Jack.]

I did?

I don't remember at all. Before he showed up at my suite this morning, I'd never seen him before in my life.

[ Jack just kind of stares at her for a moment, then drags a hand down his face. ]

Yeah. Yeah, you're definitely missing some memories there.

[Wince.]

So I'm learning.

But I don't understand. Why would I forget about someone who I took to an Opera? Why only him?

[It didn't make sense to her. Losing memories, yes, but Korra had lost all her memories. People and experiences. Time. But not only could Zatanna remember what she'd had for breakfast every day this week, she could remember everything about her home world. Every person--well, apparently except one--that she'd met on the Turtle. She could remember Jack.]

His face...when he hugged me, and then I had to ask who he was. It was like the light in his eyes just...went out. Like I'd broken his heart.

Hey...

[ Seeing her disheartened look, he closed the space between them and put his arms around her, pulling her into a hug. ]

It's all right, we'll figure it out.

[She almost tensed at the hug, thinking back to the way Dick had greeted her at the door. How warm and comforting his embrace had been. Like it should have been familiar, only wan't.]

[But Jack's touch, though cold, was even more familiar. After a pause, she returned the hug by wrapping her arms around him as well. Buying her face into his shoulder.]

Sometimes, I wonder what I'd do if I didn't have you around.

[ One hand automatically came up to stroke her dark hair lightly, pulling the tips of his fingers through the strands. ]

No use dwelling on that, I'm not going anywhere. Okay?

[She nodded once against him. But when she pulls away, traces of a genuine smile appeared.]

Neither am I.

Like I told you already, we're stuck with each other. Like a tongue to a frozen flagpole.

Careful or I may just make that literal.

[ He's glad to see that smile, even tenuous as it is. ]

How about I come in and we'll have some tea while you tell me anything you can think of since all this crazy started happening, all right?

[In response, she deliberately stuck her tongue out at him. Calling him on his bluff.]

Tea would be great, but unless you're hiding something you know about this guy, I'm not sure how it could help. I really don't remember him. At all.

[ He shakes his head, he's not hiding anything. But clues were strange things, so who knew? ]

S'ok.

[She sighed. Melodramatically.]

I guess it couldn't hurt.

Maybe spending enough time around Old Man Winter really will help me brainstorm.

[ A startled flash before Jack's expression tightens. ]

Please don't call me that.

[The reaction startled her as well. She had no idea what she said wrong, but she immediately regretted it.]

I--yeah, sure. [For Jack to take a "joke" that seriously, she knew better than to press.] I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything by it.

S'fine.

[ He gives her a nod to show it was. ]

So, tea?

[She relaxed. Crisis averted.]

[Well, one of them.]

Tea.
